Classroom teaching of child abuse prevention in Long Beach Schools

Long Beach ALIVE teaches four areas
of child abuse prevention:
Physical, sexual, emotional, and neglect.

Long Beach ALIVE is a non-profit 501(c)(3), all-volunteer organization founded in 1979 to educate 4th and 5th grade students about child abuse per the California State Law.

Serving the Long Beach Community, Long Beach ALIVE continues to teach child abuse prevention to the fourth and fifth grade students in the Long Beach Unified School District. Each year, Long Beach ALIVE Volunteer Presenters teach 121 classes at 16 schools - 2,500 students - to:

  • empower students to recognize child abuse
  • encourage them to obtain help
  • teach alternatives to physical punishment.

Child abuse continues to be a problem in Long Beach - all areas of Long Beach - refer to the statistics. Child abuse is one of the leading causes of death among children 15 years old and younger. For child abuse survivors, the ordeal of abuse and resulting psychological and emotional scars linger a lifetime.

Many studies into the causes of violent behavior in adolescents and adults have revealed that abusers are most often victims of child abuse.

Long Beach ALIVE is endorsed by the Long Beach USD - refer to the endorsement letter.

Mission:

The mission of Long Beach ALIVE is to empower Long Beach Unified School District 4th and 5th grade students on how to "Break the Silence" on sexual abuse and "Break the Cycle" of physical abuse by providing child abuse prevention information per the California State Law.

Goals:

  1. To heighten awareness and increase understanding in students of the forms of child abuse.
  2. To empower students to recognize child abuse, and encourage them to obtain help when necessary.
  3. To educate students on non-physical methods of discipline.
